Idiom and Phrases

 



An idiom is an expression, word, or phrase that has a figurative meaning.

1. To call it a day: 
Meaning: To decide and agree to stop doing something
Example: I am tired. Let's call it a day.

2. To take someone for a ride:
Meaning: To cheat or trick somebody
Example: Nowadays, the vendors take us for a ride.

3. In cold blood:
Meaning: Acting in a way that is deliberately cruel
Example: The man walked up and shot the women in cold blood.

4. To hit the jackpot:
Meaning: Being successful
Example:; to win a large amount of money in a game of chance.

5. To burn the candle at both ends:
Meaning: To work very hard and stay up very late at night
Example: James has been burning the candle at both ends for weeks.

6. At the eleventh hour: 
Meaning: At the last moment
Example: He always revises his exams at the eleventh hour.

7. A lame excuse
Meaning: Weak and difficult to believe, unconvincing
Example: John always gives lame excuses

8. Hand in glove
Meaning: Working closely with somebody, especially in a secret/or illegal way
Example: The leader and the followers work for hand in glove.

9. From the bottom of my heart:
Meaning: In a way that is sincere
Example: I thanked the boy from the bottom of my heart for helping me carry the vegetables.

10. Carry weight
Meaning: Important
Example: His opinion carries a lot of weight with the girls.
